K2, at 8,611 meters, is the second-highest mountain on Earth and widely considered the most dangerous of the eight-thousanders. Located on the China-Pakistan border in the Karakoram range, it earned the nickname Savage Mountain due to its extreme difficulty and high fatality rate — roughly one death for every four successful summits. Unlike Everest, K2 has never been climbed in winter. The first successful ascent was made by an Italian expedition in 1954, with Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni reaching the summit. Its most infamous feature is the Bottleneck, a narrow couloir just below the summit.
