Manaslu, 8,163 meters, is the eighth-highest mountain and the highest peak in Nepal's Gorkha district. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word manasa, meaning Mountain of the Spirit. First climbed in 1956 by a Japanese expedition led by Toshio Imanishi, Manaslu has a special place in Japanese mountaineering history. The mountain features long ridges and valley glaciers, offering varied climbing terrain. Its relative isolation from the main Everest trekking circuit gives it a wilder, more remote character that appeals to adventure-seeking climbers.
