Nanga Parbat, at 8,126 meters, is the ninth-highest mountain and the western anchor of the Himalayas. Located in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region, its name means Naked Mountain in Sanskrit. It earned the grim nickname Killer Mountain after claiming 31 lives before its first successful ascent in 1953 by Austrian climber Hermann Buhl, who accomplished the feat solo and without supplemental oxygen after his companions turned back. The Rupal Face on its south side is considered the highest mountain face in the world, rising 4,600 meters from base to summit.
