Broad Peak, at 8,051 meters, is the 12th highest mountain on Earth, located in the Karakoram range on the China-Pakistan border. Its name comes from its unusually wide summit ridge, which stretches for over 1.5 kilometers. First climbed in 1957 by an Austrian expedition led by Marcus Schmuck, the team made alpine-style history by climbing the peak without supplemental oxygen or high-altitude porters. Broad Peak is part of the Gasherbrum massif and is often climbed in conjunction with other nearby eight-thousanders by experienced expeditions.
