Cho Oyu, at 8,188 meters, is the sixth-highest mountain and stands on the Nepal-China border 20 kilometers west of Everest. Its Tibetan name means Turquoise Goddess. Considered the easiest of the eight-thousanders to climb, Cho Oyu features gentle slopes on its northwest face and relatively stable weather. First climbed in 1954 by an Austrian expedition, it has become a popular choice for climbers seeking their first 8,000-meter peak. The mountain's accessibility does not diminish its majesty — its massive glacial bulk dominates the skyline of the Khumbu region.
