Mount Everest, known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan, is Earth's highest mountain at 8,848.86 meters. Straddling the border between Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region, this Himalayan giant has captivated humanity for centuries. The first confirmed ascent was achieved on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, via the South Col route. Since then, over 6,000 climbers have reached its summit, though more than 300 have perished attempting the climb. The mountain's extreme altitude creates a death zone above 8,000 meters where oxygen is insufficient to sustain human life. Despite the dangers, Everest remains the ultimate goal for mountaineers worldwide, continuing to rise approximately 4mm per year due to tectonic plate movement.
