Lhotse, 8,516 meters, is the fourth-highest mountain and shares the South Col route with Everest. Its Tibetan name means South Peak. The mountain's most dramatic feature is its south face — a 3.2-kilometer vertical wall of rock and ice, one of the steepest in the Himalayas. First climbed in 1956 by Swiss mountaineers, but the south face was not conquered until 1990 by a Soviet team, and remains one of mountaineering's greatest challenges.
